A champion of the arts, community, and social justice, Liz Levitt Hirsch made an incredible impact during her lifetime, particularly through her work with her family’s foundation, the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation, where she served as Board President for a decade.
Known for her gift of connecting and inspiring people to achieve a shared vision, Liz channeled her life-long passion for the performing arts into a source for positive social change in towns and cities across America.
After her passing earlier this spring, the Levitt community came together in myriad ways to memorialize Liz and celebrate her life. In addition to heartfelt tributes on social media and on Levitt stages across the country, where grantees and artists shared memories of Liz and her impact on their communities, several Levitt locations honored Liz in unique ways.
Days following Liz’s passing, Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience played at Levitt AMP Earlham, where they dedicated a song to her memory. At Levitt AMP Woonsocket, which dedicated its entire 2024 music series to Liz’s legacy, volunteers handed out glowing neon bracelets that audience members were encouraged to help put on one another during a specific tribute to Liz at the Tartan Terrors performance. As the sun set, the bracelets lit up the night, just as Liz brightened the lives of so many in this Rhode Island town and beyond.
In Kentucky. Levitt AMP Middlesboro honored Liz through visual art, displaying photos of her and flowers in its onsite Arts Showcase, and then partnered with artist Jaime Claire Corum to add a pink peony (Liz’s favorite flower) to its signature mural adorning the concert site, a tribute to Liz’s influence on their town.
This fall, Arlington Mayor Jim Ross and the Arlington City Council recognized Liz with a Proclamation naming Tuesday, September 17, as Liz Levitt Hirsch Day in Arlington, Texas, where Levitt Pavilion Arlington is based. Additionally, the Downtown Arlington Texas Management Corporation and Texas Trust Credit Union posthumously named Liz as the 2024 Dream Builder during its Downtown Arlington Annual Meeting in September. This award, which was accepted by Levitt Pavilion Arlington on Liz’s behalf, honors individuals who have made the greatest contributions to revitalizing downtown Arlington and making Arlington the American Dream City.
During the summer, Liz’s family and friends gathered to commemorate her life and honor her legacy at two venues she was proud to support over the years. On Saturday, August 3, Levitt Pavilion Los Angeles presented a tribute concert to Liz and included a pre-show reception, where friends and family celebrated Liz while experiencing indie folk pop band Y La Bamba under the stars. Then on September 14, Liz’s Celebration of Life took place at The Soraya Center for the Performing Arts in Northridge, California, where more than 200 people gathered to honor Liz with moving tributes, photos and videos, and performances featuring arts organizations and artists beloved by Liz, including the Joffrey Ballet, LA Master Chorale, Los Angeles-based dance company BODYTRAFFIC, and Chris Pierce, who has performed on Levitt stages across the country.
Liz once shared, “Throughout my life I’ve loved music and recognized that free, live music in public spaces brings people together, creating joy and enriching our well-being.” By collectively celebrating Liz and her legacy through these inspired tributes and more, Levitt locations continued to bring her vision to life in beautiful ways and we’re honored to be a part of it.
