Learn more about mitigating risk and navigating critical situations, from crowd protocols to inclement weather planning to internal and external communications, with this series of trainings and workshops on public safety & security.

 

Presented by security expert and Levitt network consultant Peter Ashwin, this series of live trainings offers sessions on risk management, event safety and security, crisis response, and communications—designed to enhance your team’s capabilities and resilience to adverse events in today’s threat environment and uncertain world.  

You’ll learn about event industry standards and principles for public safety and security, for a risk-assessment approach to planning safe and secure events with an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere. Individuals who attend live or watch the recordings of all eight training sessions will receive a Certificate of Event Safety Training issued by Event Risk Management Solutions (ERMS) and the Levitt Foundation.

Peter Ashwin brings over 20 years of experience in security risk management. In addition to consulting on events, Peter is an author, lecturer, speaker and expert witness on event risk management and security. He is also recognized as an industry leader and actively contributes to the private security sector and events industry through his commitment as a volunteer lecturer/instructor at the IFEA/NRPA Event Management School and the IAVM Academy of Venue Safety & Security. Hailing from Australia, Peter is now based in Montreal, Canada and Boise, Idaho.

TUESDAY  |  September 17

Essential Event First Aid & Responding to Medical Incidents 

For the first training session for the fall series, Peter will share practical tips on developing an event medical (first aid) support plan and coordination protocols for responding to medical incidents. Additionally, this 90-minute session will also include an opportunity for participants to share their real world experiences responding to and managing medical incidents during their 2024 concert series.

Planning Safe & Inclusive Concert Series Events 

During this 90-minute session, Peter will share practical tips and suggestions on how to enhance the safety and security of your event through non-traditional, welcoming approaches and the application of low-cost, “soft security measures. Additionally, he will discuss best practices and ways to build and/or enhance your relationships with law enforcement, police, and other local public safety resources, all of which you can leverage for more robust and coordinated support for your events. 

 

TUESDAY  |  October 15

Mitigating Crowd Safety Risks

This 90-minute session introduces key concepts for risk-based crowd safety planning for events, ranging from smaller concert sites to Levitt Pavilion-sized audiences. During this session, Peter will discuss crowd dynamics, factors that influence crowd behavior during an event, and how to mitigate crowd safety risks through design, information, and management principles. Additionally, Peter will share tips and techniques for estimating crowd size at your event.

Event Readiness

To close out the 2024 Public Safety & Security Training Series, Peter will present a 90-minute session on how to test and evaluate your emergency response procedures through a risk-based, “what if” scenario discussion exercise, commonly referred to as a tabletop exercise (TTX). TTXs are team-based discussion exercises that focus on enhancing problem-solving, decision-making, and team preparedness and resilience to respond to a range of situations, from the knowns to the unknowns, during your concert series.

Part III Levitt Safety & Security Forum

To wrap up the 2024 Public Safety & Security Training Series, Part III of the Levitt Safety & Security Forum provides an opportunity for participants to reflect on all eight training sessions offered in 2024 and ask any questions as you prepare for your 2025 concert series. During this 60-minute session, Peter will also revisit the public safety & security resources, tools, and templates that have been provided throughout the year.
